As the landfill reaches the final stages of its operational life, Mindarie Regional Council (MRC) has begun the process of accessing stockpiles of capping material (limestone) in the Tamala Park quarry.
The quarry – which sits to the south of the site - was created in the early 1990s when the initial landfilling area was first excavated. Since then, stockpiles of limestone have been stored there, some for more than 20 years, creating an artificial screen (or hill) to the site’s southern boundary.
For residents living to the south of Tamala Park, this screen would easily be mistaken for a natural landform, particularly as MRC has – from time to time – seeded the top of the stockpile with native vegetation.
Having sufficient capping material is essential to successfully capping (sealing) and closing the landfill, which – based on current projections – is expected to take place in either 2028 or 2029. MRC is committed to closing the landfill in line with Best Practice Environmental Management guidelines.
In carrying out this work, it has been necessary to remove a small number of trees from the top of stockpile.
We are working hard to meet the operational needs of the landfill closure while maintaining a substantial amount of the existing visual screen which residents to the south of our site have become accustomed to.
