Sustainable fashion workshops to help Wanneroo residents keep textiles out of landfill

A new initiative by the City of Wanneroo is set to inspire residents to refresh their wardrobe and rethink waste, with a series of creative workshops promoting the repair, reuse and restyling of old textiles.

The city will hold a series of events between the 13 and 30 June as part of its Sustainable Fashion Fiesta. The events will include hands-on experiences aimed at extending the life of textiles - an important step in efforts to divert valuable materials away from landfill.

Textiles are among the fastest growing waste streams in Australia, with over 300,000 tonnes of clothing either sent to landfill or exported as waste from Australia each year.

The event program aims to teach practical skills to help residents extend the life of their favourite clothes, swap unwanted outfits for something new, as well as provide an opportunity to turn unwanted clothes into entirely new items.

All sessions are hosted at local libraries within the City of Wanneroo and many are free to attend.

Full details can be found on the City of Wanneroo website. Tickets and places at each event are available through Eventbrite.
