New facility to supercharge electronics recycling in Perth’s north

Perth’s northern suburbs are getting a major boost in electronic waste recycling, with a new facility able to capture up to 450 tonnes of valuable materials each year.

A new purpose-built electronic waste (e-waste) handling depot at Tamala Park Waste Management Facility will open later this year, following a $140,000 joint investment by the Mindarie Regional Council (MRC) and the Western Australian State Government.

Spanning 350 square metres, the new depot is one of the largest e-waste facilities of its kind in Western Australia, dramatically expanding the region’s capacity to safely collect and process unwanted electronic products. This includes common household items which are powered through a plug or by batteries, including televisions, computers and laptops, mobile phones, vacuum cleaners, coffee machines and power tools.

The new facility comes as demand for e-waste recycling continues to grow following a state-wide ban on sending e-waste to landfill, implemented in July 2024. Waste management authorities like MRC have been working to invest in new infrastructure to ensure communities have convenient and accessible recycling options.

Already the second busiest community recycling hub in Western Australia, Tamala Park is the latest facility to deliver new e-waste recycling investment as part of a $10 million grants program administered by the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER).

Cr Stephanie Proud JP, Chair of Mindarie Regional Council, said: “This new facility is an investment in the future of waste management in our region, ensuring that MRC can continue to serve our communities – both now and in the decades ahead.

“By investing today, we’re helping to build a resilient circular economy for our state – supporting the recovery of key resources and keeping pace with the way people live and consume technology.”
