Fridge/freezer/air-cons drop-off – changes from 27 July

Published on Monday, 27 July 2026 at 7:00:00 AM

From 27 July 2026, Workpower – who operate the Recycling & Reuse area at Tamala Park Waste Management Facility – will charge a $28 processing fee for each fridge, freezer, air-conditioner or other similar item they receive.

This fee will cover the cost of preparing these items for recycling, in line with State Government requirements.

What is this fee for?

Common household appliances like fridges, freezers and air-conditioners contain refrigerant gases which must be removed before the items can be recycled.

Removing these gases – known as de-gassing – can only be carried out by a licensed technician using specialist equipment. Unless this process is done properly and carefully harmful greenhouse gases can escape into the environment.

Under State and Federal Law it is illegal to attempt to degas these items yourself, and doing so carries severe financial penalties.

Workpower employs licensed technicians to carry out this work, allowing these appliances to be taken apart and the metal, plastic and electronic components recovered.

The $28 per-item processing fee will directly cover the cost of this work.

Where should I take these items?

From 27 July 2026, all fridges, freezers, air-conditioners and other items which require de-gassing should be taken to the Recycling & Reuse area.

Customers bringing these items over the weighbridge will be asked to deposit them at Recycling & Reuse first, before being permitted to unload general/other waste at the Transfer Station.

How can I pay?

Workpower accepts payment by EFTPOS at the Fridges, freezers & air-cons bay.

Customers can pay by cash at the Reuse Shop.
