About Us

The Mindarie Regional Council

The normal waste collected each week from households by each of the member councils is taken to Tamala Park for disposal. Some 350,000 tonnes of waste are sent to landfill at Tamala Park each year.

The MRC is currently embarking on a major initiative in support of the State Government's WAste2020 vision of "Towards Zero Waste" by reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill each year.

The MRC is planning to establish its first Resources Recovery Facility, which offers the triple benefits of reducing the amount of waste currently sent to landfill by about 70,000 tonnes per year. The ability to treat that waste to create new products such as market-quality compost; and, consequently, a reduced need to burn additional fossil fuels to create new products.

The MRC expects the Resources Recovery Facility to be operational by mid-2009.

Management and policy guidelines such as the MRC's Environmental Management and Monitoring Policy, and its Waste Education Strategy, are designed to assist the Council maintain high operational, monitoring, reporting and quality standards.

More Than Just Landfill

The Tamala Park waste disposal facility also provides the general public with comprehensive refuse disposal services, a recycling centre and shop with free firewood available, and a receival area for unwanted electrical items such as computers, keyboards and mobile phones.

With the approval of the Council, Landfill Gas and Power  are currently producing electricity on site. This is obtained from extracting the landfill gas (containing methane) within the landfill site.  The gas is used for the production of electricity, and will creates another income stream for the benefit of the council and its Member Councils and ratepayers.
